The University of Texas-Pan American men's basketball program announced that Reggie Cook (Lawton, OK/Cowley Community College) has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Broncs for the 2008-09 academic campaign.
"I'm very excited about the signing of Reggie to our program," said head men's basketball coach Tom Schuberth. "Reggie comes from a very talented team that has had tremendous success. He brings experience as well as the ability to make other players great scorers."
"Reggie is a great competitor, an excellent leader and the success that he's had will make his transition to our program easier," said Schuberth.
The newly-signed Bronc comes to the Rio Grande Valley from Cowley Community College where he spent the year under the direction of head coach Steve Eck who was named Kansas Jayhawk Eastern Division Coach of the Year.
Cook helped lead the Tigers to a school-record of 31 wins and first conference title since the 1990-91 season. In 30 games, Cook finished his sophomore campaign averaging 7.8 points and 3.1 assists per game and garnered second team all-conference honors.
The 6-1 southpaw spent a season at Redlands Community College before transferring to Cowley College when Eck was named head coach of the Tigers. At Redlands C.C., Cook was on a squad that finished with a 30-2 overall record and was ranked No. 1 in the NJCAA poll for three weeks.
Cook joins a program that recorded an 18-13 overall record while going 7-1 against independent opponents. Schuberth led the Broncs to their first winning season since the 2001-02 season and was named Independent Coach of the Year.
The newly-signed Bronc joins Jason Jensen (Milwaukee, WI/St. Francis High School) as the newest members of the Valley's men's basketball team.
